Twice worldchampion and also silvermedalist in the 2004 Olympics Ara Abrahamian certainly had good reasons:
1) In the last Olympics 2004, Ara lost the final after very peculiar refeering, the judges were afterwards suspended for two years because of receiving bribes.
2) Pelle Svensson, former member of the FILA board of for 16 years, and former President of Fila’s Disciplinary Committee, left his position when his proposal was completely ignored by the FILA board. His proposal? That the referees should be selected randomly just before for each match. Why? So that they cannot be bribed. Pelle Svensson has even received death treats.
3) The President of the Italian Wrestling association is M Pellicone. He is also vice president of Fila. His best friend, the Italoswiss R Martinetti, is president of Fila. Together these two ASSIGNED the referees for the match.
4) Jean-Marc Petoud, the MAIN REFEREE, is a COUSIN of Martinetti.
5) The swedish team PROTESTED against the assignment of referee already in good time BEFORE THE MATCH started, but was left unheard.
6) When “randomly” selecting which wrestler should meet which, the referees glanced into the bag before picking up the ball.
7) Minguzzi was clearly in the blue zone early in the match but no warning was made. Abrahamian had ONE hand in the blue zone, which is normally not penalized.
8) At that point the referee first awards Abrahamian with a point. But after a few moments, AFTER the round, assigns the point and the match to Minguzzi.
9) Ara+coach requested referees to check video, which, by wrestling rules, they have to do. However, they refused.
10) There is much more on this, please google to find out more. Hopefully Ara's courage will lead to changes in FILA.

Twice world champion and silver medalist in the 2004 Olympics Ara Abrahamian is a hero, showing courage to stand up against the corrupt FILA. In 2004, he also got cheated by a bribed referee (who later apparently acknowledged that he had taken bribes) and got the silver instead of gold. And now in 2008, the referee calls in Ara's semifinal are so bad that they can not be explained by unintentional mistakes by the referees--clearly they had been bribed.

1) Pelle Svensson, former member of the FILA board of for 16 years, and former
President of Fila's Disciplinary Committee, left his position when his
proposal was completely ignored by the FILA board. His proposal? That the
referees should be selected randomly just before for each match. Why? So
that they cannot be bribed. Pelle Svensson has even received death treats.

2) The President of the Italian Wrestling association is M Pellicone. He is
also vice president of Fila. His best friend, the Italoswiss R Martinetti,
is president of Fila. Together these two ASSIGNED the referees for the
 match.

3) Jean-Marc Petoud, the MAIN REFEREE, is a COUSIN of Martinetti.

4) The swedish team PROTESTED against the assignment of referee already in
good time BEFORE THE MATCH started, but was left unheard.

5) When "randomly" selecting which wrestler should meet which, the referees
glance into the bag before picking up the ball.

6) Minguzzi was clearly in the blue zone early in the match but no warning was
made. Abrahamian had ONE hand in the blue zone, which is normally not
 penalized.

7) At that point the referee first awards Abrahamian with a point. But after a
few moments, AFTER the round, assigns the point and the match to Minguzzi.

8) The referees refused to review the recording of the incidences, despite the
fact that they would have come to another conclusion if they had! Why? The Swedish team requested the referees to review it, and by wrestling rules the referees have to do it -- but in spite of this they simply refused.

9) The Swedish team did file a formal complaint right after the semi-final, but the IOC/FILA refused to even look at it.

10) The IOC did however decide to investigate Ara's behaviour. In the hearings, FILA's representative, Secretary General Michel Dusson, after 1.5 hours of discussions, when asked a simple question, replied that he does not understand English, and instead read a pre-written statement in French! Gee, talk about a new diamond-level member in the Arrogance Club!

11) The IOC choose to punish Ara Abrahamian harsly. Why? Well, they asked FILA's president Martinetti for advice, and IOC did pretty much exaclty what Martinetti had told them to do in his e-mail to them. But wait, Ara Abrahamian is accusing Martinetti for corruption, and IOC ask Martinetti to decide what to do with Abrahamian... fair trail? Not!!!

Pierre de Coubertin said the important thing is not to win, but to take part.
Take part in WHAT, exactly??

Why did the referee in the semi final suddenly decide to give Minguzzi an
extra point AFTER the second period had ended?
Why did Fila refuse to even read the swedish protest?
Why did the referee laugh in Abrahamians face after the match? Many questions to be answered.

By the way, it is not the first time medals are refused -- in 1972, the whole
USA Basketball team refused the silvermedal after having lost against USSR in
a very controversial match (referee bribed...) See story in wikipedia...at

The IOC cannot approve of such actions by one athelete but i can. If he came to the us i would give him a medal. maybe not a gold olympics medal. but maybe the kind of medal they give to heroes. the kind they give to the man who stands up for what he believes in.
Ara Abrahamian is a Hero.
