When my server, which is running Windows 2003 Server, is transferring alot of data over the network, I often get this message when connected with Remote Desktop: “Because of an error in data encryption, this session will end.”, which is very very annoying when it’s happening repeatedly. I think this problem started with the latast RDP client, I never had this problem in Windows 2000 Server. There are no updates or patches available to fix this, so I have Googled this alot but never came up with a solution that worked for me. The most common suggestions are:

  1. Edit the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters and delete the values “Certificate”, “X509 Certificate” and “X509 Certificate ID” and restart the server.
  2. Upgrade firmware of your Linksys router.

Well I don’t have a Linksys router and the registry edit didn’t work. But then I found another site that suggested editing advanced properties of the Realtek NIC, and I do have an integrated Realtek network card in my box so I gave it a try.

  1. Disable the following properties in advanced settings: “Offload checksum” and “Offload TCP Largesend”. Restart server.

Since I did that this error has not happened again, atleast not yet, and I still have gigabit capabilities. I hope this problem is really fixed now.
